There is a MeMe going around at the moment that quite frankly boggles the mind. It's a House Compatibility test, basically. It gives you a list of things and you mark the ones that pertain to you... however, I feel that the person that made this wasn't at all familiar with just how each house system works.

Here's a link to the MeMe that I filled out. Slytherin all the way.

Okay, so let me point out a few things with this test that I find ironic, out of place, or just generally unneeded.

Firstly, what's with the Muggle Sports? Even if muggle sports DID have a place in Harry Potter, what the hell makes you think that they would extend toward Slytherins? No self-respecting Slytherin would partake in a muggle past-time. Not because they're racist, no, because they're more "civilized."

Secondly, the music. I think it's pretty common knowledge that your taste in music doesn't reflect who you are.

Thirdly, and by far the most ridiculous.... The Slytherin side of things asks if you've ever thought about committing suicide. As teenagers I think that the thought has arisen for most of us, even if there was no weight behind it. However, a Slytherin is all about SELF-PRESERVATION. What makes you think Slytherin and Suicide go hand in hand?
Now a few other things I felt were off-key for the MeMe:
Gryffindor: You haven't made fun of someone for at least two months. - Cause you know, they never had a thing to say about those lovable Slytherins
Gryffindor: You get good grades at school. - Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's more a Ravenclaw thing.
Gryffindor: One of the worst things you can do is lie. - Cause Harry never did any of that. That's more Hufflepuff.
Gryffindor: You plan on going to university/college. - Again more Ravenclaw.
[ profile] ships_harry - I totally thought Gryffindor would be the house of chemical experimentation.
Hufflepuff: Water Polo is awesome. - General WTF
Hufflepuff: Pink is one of your favorite colors. - ....What? What does pink have to do with Hufflepuff?!
Hufflepuff: Black is morbid and depressing. - And also one of their house colors. THE HORROR!
Hufflepuff: Rap, R&B and Hip Hop is your favorite music genre. - Hufflepuffs are gangstas. Represent!
Hufflepuff: You've made fun of at least one person this week. - Uh-huh. Cause they'll huffle and puffle and blow your house down.
Ravenclaw: You're depressed to a certain extent. - Why do I have a feeling this was based off Moaning Myrtle because she was in Ravenclaw?
Ravenclaw: Sports suck. - Please, tell that to Cho. - [ profile] ships_harry
Ravenclaw: You're shy. - I don't think I'd attribute Ravenclaws as shy, especially when they likely dominate a classroom.
Ravenclaw: Loyalty is the MOST important thing in a relationship. - Loyalty isn't a Ravenclaw attribute. Honesty is probably more their style.
Ravenclaw: Hate is completely unneeded. - I think Ravenclaws understand far better than most the balance between good and bad. This is more a Hufflepuff sentiment.
Ravenclaw: Indie is your favorite genre of music. - Again, I think we're stereotyping music.
Ravenclaw: Every once in awhile you have little anger outbursts. - What does this have to do with.... anything?
Ravenclaw: Serious is better than funny. - "Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure." - [ profile] valinorean
Slytherin: Basketball is a good sport / Foot ball is amazing. - Muggle Sport. Aristocratic pureblood wizard. I see the correlation.
Slytherin: Black is a cool color. - I'm sure black is seen as more distinguished and respectable, but what does it have to do with anything?
Slytherin: You have considered suicide. - Going back to the "Slytherins are into Self-Preservation" thing.
Slytherin: You like metal. - Pretty sure Slytherins don't even know what that is.
Slytherin: They make school seem more important than it is. - I can't agree that a Slytherin doesn't find their education important. Ravenclaws understand knowledge is power, but I'm pretty sure the Slytherins have figured it out too.
Slytherin: You're scared to grow up. - I don't see how this is a strictly Slytherin sentiment unless you put it against getting the Dark Mark when you come of age.
Slytherin: You have done drugs in the past month. - Yes, let's relinquish control and power to the mind-numbing effects of drugs. It's cool to be vulnerable. That's what Slytherins are all about.
Sooo, as you can see, while these might be things that people outside of Harry Potter looking in might relate to our fandom, it's just not so.
[info]melusinahp  and I decided to make a new MeMe that isn't ridiculous like this. One that represents what each of the four houses represent not by looks, but by the inner-workings. As such, we're coming to our flists to help us dictate what's good for each list. So any contribution on the matter would be greatly appreciated. :D

I agree! This thing is crazy! Muggle sports?! Making fun of people? That should be in Hufflepuff.

The loyalty should be in Hufflepuff or Gryffindor.

Maybe stuff about appearances and how much stock you put into them.

How you go about making plans: Head first, follower, plan out every little event, measure and weight what will benefit you the most.

Basic stuff like would you like to be out in the sunshine, hanging with your friends, curled up with a good book, etc.

Goals for the future, like help make a different or whatever.

Hmm.... I can't think of anything else right now. XD

You know how the first question for Gryffindor is "You've never done illegal drugs"? I totally thought Gryffindor would be the house of chemical experimentation.

"I have these pills!"
"Awesome, what do they do?"
"No idea, want some?"

The Ravenclaws will stand idly by the side their quills poised to record the effects. Slytherins will take bets on who will pass out first while the Hufflepuffs try to get help unsuccessfully thanks to both Ravenclaw and Slytherin banding together to keep them contained.

For Gryffindor

Your friends mean everything to you.
You'll try anything once.
You fight for your beliefs, even if it means getting a bit bloody.
You tend to leap before you look.

You don't mind getting your hands dirty.
You tend to finish what you start.
You stick up for your friends no matter what.
You enjoy working as part of a team.

You are often accused of having your head in the clouds.
It would be so much easier to get things done if people would just stay calm and rational.
You don't expect most people to understand the things you find most interesting.
You're really good at planning complex Quidditch strategies.

You believe the end justifies the means.
You're better than most people. It's just a fact.
You'll do anything to protect what's yours.
You know how to make things happen, either as a charismatic leader or by pulling strings behind the scenes.
You tend to get what you want.

Yeah, Gryffindors did more drugs than all the other houses put together, thanks to the Weasley twins.

Also, I think honesty is probably best ascribed to Hufflepuffs, not Ravenclaws. Remember the Grey Lady stole her mother's diadem. There should be a question about how much you value intelligence for Ravenclaw.

I love what resonant said in Transfigurations:

"A Gryffindor will jump off a cliff," Penelope said. Her tone suggested that it was a well-worn proverb. "A Slytherin will push someone else off. A Hufflepuff will call in five hundred other Hufflepuffs, and they'll carve a stairway. And a Ravenclaw -- " She winked at Madeleine Aerie, who joined in with her: "A Ravenclaw will get hold of a flying carpet."

Other house stuff:

Hmm, muggle proverbs that might fit different houses -
1. Bravery is not the absence of fear but the will to overcome it.
2. Rules are meant to be broken.
3. Whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

1. Be studious in your profession, and you will be learned.
2. You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.

1. Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.
2. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.

1. He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.
2. Never go to bed angry. Stay up and plot your revenge.

Something that may be Hufflepuffy that stuck out for me was Ernie MacMillan's apology to Harry in CoS after they learned that Harry wasn't the one petrifying everyone. Maybe this--admitting when you are wrong--can be a Hufflepuff trait (the sorting hat at one point described them as just)?

Date: 2011-03-29 11:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
I have to agree with that. If anyone can admit they are wrong then it's a Hufflepuff.

Can you imagine a Slytherin swallowing their pride or a Ravenclaw admitting to not knowing something? Even a Gryffindor might have a little trouble.

Here via melusinahp to wonder about the House attitude to cash.

Gryffindors gamble - and don't really worry about the odds.

Slytherins invest - for the highest return they can find - in cash or influence.

Ravenclaws bookmake - they know exactly what odds to offer, and the House always wins.

Hufflepuffs save - so that they can contribute to charities, and pay their taxes.

These house affiliation-memes and sortings are mostly pretty bad but this one is exceptionally bad! LOL

I also don't understand why "favourite colour" is always a part of this. My favourite colour is green... but I think I'm rather a tree-loving Hufflepuff than a Slytherin. Colours are really not important.

I agree that colors aren't important, but when they actually affiliated with the house, I just let it go. I think I was happy they actually got SOMETHING right.

OK, let's say we want to make a muggle-appropriate sorting checklist.

* You never ask a teacher, "Will this be on the exam?" Your friend's brother took the class; you know what will be on the exam.
* It's only classy to talk about sportsmanship if you've won the game.
* When you like someone, you help her tweak her resume.
* When you get your first job, you become the person who knows when all the birthdays are, and which coworkers like flowers and which ones like to be taken out for drinks.

* Kirk or Spock? Kirk.
* When confronted with the choice of a youth hostel or a nice hotel, you pick camping on the beach.
* You own a few bottles of green alcoholic beverages from different countries, with one drink taken out of each.
* Parenting is really hard for you because you remember the things you used to get up to at school.

* "That's an interesting hypothesis, I wonder how we can verify that?"
* The worst thing you ever call anyone is "narrow-minded."
* The house system is rather ridiculous, isn't it?
* "Look what I found, isn't it lovely?" is something you often find yourself saying at work.

* The first thing you bought for your new apartment after Hogwarts was an aerobed or futon, because you wanted to be sure you had somewhere for friends to stay
* When one of your friends was being treated for cancer, you all shaved your heads
* You like to call it tenacity, but your family calls it "never being able to let anything go."

I think it's awesome you're making a new one. With collaborative input! The old one . . . er, didn't make sense to me.

The Kirk or Spock question made me think you could have some questions about which characters from other canons you identify with, according to House. E.g.

Gryffindor: I identify with Frodo Baggins
Hufflepuff: I identify with Samwise Gamgee
Ravenclaw: I identify with Elrond of Rivendell
Slytherin: I identify with Boromir

But it should probably just be a different meme or poll where you sort people from other canons into their Houses . . .

Date: 2011-03-29 04:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
XDD That's a good idea! I don't know if we could use it since not everyone would be able to identify because they're not familiar, but it's still something to consider. (Though, who hasn't read/seen The Lord of the Rings, I don't know.)

I find most of those house sorting memes kind of shaky. I can see certain likes to maybe represent personality, but your favorite color? Whether you like milk chocolate, or dark chocolate, soccer or water polo... That doesn't have much to do with personality.

I think you could probably study the Myers Briggs personality test and utilize stuff from that.

The head in the clouds/feet firmly on the ground kind of questions. Do you feel better before or after a decision is made. Etc.

Also, scenario questions would probably be good, too. But those can also be ridiculous.

So to start, I guess you really need to define the houses and all we REALLY have are the Hat's songs and stereotypes the characters presented.

Pertinent parts bolded.
Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone
Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can top them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a steady mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!

Goblet of Fire
A thousand years or more ago,
When I was newly sewn,
There lived four wizards of renown,
Whose names are still well known:
Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.

They shared a wish, a hope, a dream,
They hatched a daring plan
To educate young sorcerers
Thus Hogwarts School began.
Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones they had to teach.
By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
And power-hungry Slytherin
Loved those of great ambition.

While still alive they did divide
Their favourites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When they were dead and gone?
'Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!
Now slip me snug about your ears,
I've never yet been wrong,
I'll have a look inside your mind
And tell where you belong!

Order of the Phoenix
In times of old when I was new
And Hogwarts barely started
The Founders of our noble school
Thought never to be parted:
United by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.
"Together we will build and teach!"
The Four good friends decided
And never did they dream that they
Might someday be divided,
For were there such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor?
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw?
So how could it have gone so wrong?
How could such friendships fail?
Why, I was there and so can tell
The whole sad, sorry tale.
Said Slytherin, "We'll teach just those
Whose ancestry is purest."
Said Ravenclaw, "We'll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest."
Said Gryffindor, "We'll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name,"
Said Hufflepuff, "I'll teach the lot,
And treat them just the same."

These differences caused little strife
When first they came to light,
For each of the four founders had
A House in which they might
Take only those they wanted, so,
For instance, Slytherin
Took only pure-blood wizards
Of great cunning, just like him,
And only those of sharpest mind
Were taught by Ravenclaw
While the bravest and the boldest
Went to daring Gryffindor,
Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest,
And taught them all she knew,

Thus the Houses and their founders
Retained friendships firm and true.
So Hogwarts worked in harmony
For several happy years,
But the discord crept among us
Feeding on our faults and fears.
The Houses that, like pillars four,
Had once held up our school,
Now turned upon each other and,
Divided, sought to rule.
And for a while it seemed the school
Must meet an early end,
What with dueling and with fighting
And the clash of friend on friend
And at last there came a morning
When old Slytherin departed
And though the fighting then died out
He left us quite downhearted.
And never since the founders four
Were whittled down to three
Have the Houses been united
And they once were meant to be.
And now the Sorting Hat is here
And you all know the score:
I sort you into Houses
Because that is what I'm for,
But this year I'll go further,
Listen closely to my song:
Though condemned I am to split you
Still I worry that it's wrong,
Though I must fulfill my duty
And must quarter every year
Still I wonder whether sorting
May not bring the end I fear.
Oh, know the perils, read the signs,
The warning history shows,
For our Hogwarts is in danger
From external, deadly foes
And we must unite inside her
Or we'll crumble from within
I have told you, I have warned you..
Let the sorting now begin

So, I really think you should work with this and use these as a basis. I know lots of people say Gryffindors are loyal, but that's not their trait. Individuals can have such traits, but that isn't what the House is known for. And that's another thing, the Houses are known for a few specific things, and while characters (Hermione - intelligence, Harry - cunning) show signs of the other traits from other Houses, it isn't as strong.

It's a good thing that you're fixing this. I agree.

We'll see what we can cook up. I can't say it'll be great, but I can promise it'll be a far sight better. Lol.

On another note, I've always thought of an army and which house would fill which position:

The tactics would be covered by Ravenclaw, the spies would be Slytherin, the Generals would be Gryffindors, and the quartermaster/supplier would be Hufflepuff.

XD I love that.

For some reason I like when you can take a situation and be able to clearly define each role.

I'm useless and have nothing to add, but I love that you and melusinahp are doing this. &hearts
PS: I have actually been thinking about what medical specialty would correlate with each House, but I got too scared of the wank. I will propose that Gryffindor=orthopedic surgeons...difficult to argue with that ;)))

Seems like they'd have enough injuries running head long to be aptly qualified for that role! Lol.

Eh, it's just your opinion, and that certain opinion isn't hurting anyone. So think more on it. :)

Pardon me, I'm still trying to get past the part where Hufflepuffs are gangsta.

XDD I was hoping someone would find them at least humorous in the deep pool of sad they reside in.

- "You're very traditional about gender roles," would be one I've always considered to be Slytherin (according to the books anyway. I don't really see all the houses representing what the hat's songs say they do, but that's another topic entirely.)

- "Class(iness) can't be bought," another Slytherin

- "It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all," - Gryffindor

- (When you have to do something you don't want to), "You put your head down and power through." - Hufflepuff (Michael said that in Arrested Development. LOVED that show, and I always think of that line when I have to do something annoying.)

Here by way of [ profile] teshara

One things I have noticed was missing was food references:

Gryffindor: Pizza and Beer.

Hufflepuff: Stew and Beer/Water.

Ravenclaw: Sushi and Saki.

Slytherin: Steak and Wine.
